What's Happening the Week of September 17, 2023:
It was great to meet the second grade parents at Back to School Night. If you could not make it, the handouts were sent home with your child on Friday. I posted my "Back to School Night" presentation in the link box below.
Please check your child's Take Home Folder daily for mail; homework should be put into this folder.
Daily homework assignments will be written under the morning news in the GREEN NOTEBOOK. Spelling homework is always written in the GREEN NOTEBOOK; do not use looseleaf.
Students may use the IXL website for enrichment; it can be accessed from my link box below. Use your child's school Google acoount to sign in.

Religion
Chapter 2 explains how God made human beings in His image and likeness. We can think, we can choose, and we can love. God made us to share love and friendship with Him. When we give of ourselves and love like God, it is like we are giving a gift. We will discuss how we can share our love with others.
Math
The students will use their addition skills to solve tricky word problems, add three addends, and begin reviewing subtraction concepts.
An addition quiz is planned for Wednesday.
Reading
This week's Essential Question is: "How are families around the world the same and different?".This week's stories, "Maria Celebrates Brazil" and "The Big Red Lollipop", will help us explore this important question.
We will explore the literary genre of realistic fiction and learn about its characteristics.
The students will keep practicing how to use a graphic organizer to find information about the story, "The Big Red Lollipop". Students will use their organizers to answer the Essential Question on Friday.
Phonics
We begin the second week of Unit 1 and will learn how to write and mark up more complex words containing blends, digraphs, and digraph-blends.
The closed syllable word type will be introduced. This happens when a word has one short vowel and is followed (or closed in) by one or more consonants. Students will scoop and mark up these words by writing a "c" inside the scoop for "closed syllables" . Examples of closed syllable words are: ship, fat, block, bend, and duck.
There are resources and videos in the link box below to practice at home. It is a good idea to keep the unit letters for future reference.
There is no quiz on Thursday.
Grammar
This week's lessons will continue to focus on writing sentences and how to tell the difference between a phrase and a complete sentence. Capitalization and punctuation rules will also be reviewed.
Writing
The class will begin writing the final version of their stories about a friend that is special to them.
Fall is coming soon! They will also begin working on a sensory poem about this season.
